Keep in mind that a raycast can only hit a surface that is “facing” the raycast. Of course it depends what you actually intend to hit. This of course ignores any other gameobject or collider. Note that you can actually cast a ray only against a single collider with Collider.Raycast. So instead of casting from the inside outwards, you can start outside and cast inwards. For that you would need to either export the different submeshes as separate meshes, or write a script that creates a new Mesh and only include those submeshes you’re interested in.Īnother solution could be to simply “reverse” your raycast. What you need to do is create separate colliders for the different parts. So for convex meshes it wouldn’t be possible to differentiate between different parts anymore.

Also note that when you tick the “convex” box the original mesh isn’t used anymore but Unity calculates a convex hull of the original mesh and use that as collider. When you provide a Mesh, it will use that mesh to create a collider. However the MeshCollider does not support this. What you would need is to make a MeshCollider only use certain submeshes from the provided mesh.

The MeshCollider actually has a PhysicMaterial that determines certain physical properties like friction and bounciness. However the MeshCollider has no concept of those materials. The MeshRenderer in addition has a list of materials to apply to certain submeshes when rendering the object.
